Message to Members
The Board of the Halifax Women’s History Society wishes to update you on some exciting progress made in the past weeks.
First, we would like to welcome all new members — we have nearly 100 members now. Thank you everyone for your continued support.
The very good news — we have received charitable status from the Canada Revenue Agency under the Income Tax Act. The Society is now designated as a Charitable Organization.
This allows the Society to issue receipts for donations toward our project, A Woman on the Waterfront. These receipts can be used to reduce the income tax of an individual or corporate donor. Registered charities also are eligible to receive gifts from other registered charities, such as foundations. Registration provides increased credibility in the community, because registered charities must follow certain rules and guidelines to maintain their registration.
Charitable status allows us to move ahead and we are launching our fund-raising campaign this fall. Donations can now be made through PayPal at our web site, http://halifaxwomenshistory.ca, which we have launched this week. Please have a look. Our web site is a beginning site and our plans are to expand its content as we grow.
Board members are meeting with various officials and groups. We have spoken to the Junior League of Halifax, the Local Council of Women and various women’s church organizations. We have also met with Mayor Mike Savage and received a positive response — he is one of our newest members.
We will be busy during the remainder of the fall, meeting with various groups and putting plans in place for our official launch in 2015. We plan to communicate more frequently now that we are moving ahead with our goal of erecting a Woman on the Waterfront.
